Appreciation for the Unique: Jerome Abrams

Jerome Abrams may be a unique doctor. Many doctors have scheduled appointments where they only spend a few minute with the patient. Patients spend more time waiting to be seen or talking with a nurse than the doctor. Jerome Abrams is bound to operating in this kind of system, but he tries to be different. Instead of looking at a patient’s medical records, asking about symptoms, and prescribing a medication before calling the visit over, he tries to understand the patient as a person.

Jerome Abrams values all people as unique individuals. He understands how easy it is for people to be categorized together. But he doesn’t want to see patients that way. Jerome Abrams was a philosophy student before becoming a medical student and he works in his community often. He meets many people and through experience and compassion, learned that how people care for themselves is a reflection on how they interact with the world around them. By understanding how patients relate to their position in a family, in a community, in a relationship, and in their stage of life, he can help them understand their health and take steps to maintain and improve their health over time.

Jerome Abrams fully comprehends that everyone is unique. It is this understanding that earned him the vote for 2nd best physician in Kent County in 2014. As a physician, it is easy to categorize him as well-educated and knowledgeable, but he is unique himself. He is a husband, father, traveler, reader, and community participant. He volunteers to help men at his local homeless shelter and produces plays at his local children’s theater.
